IEEE has approved the two new FireWire standards 1600 and 3200. The new IEEE 1394-2008 specification will introduce support for S1600 (1.6 GB/s) and S3200 (3.2 GB/s). The new specifications will be fully compatible with previous ports S400 and S800. The new faster FireWire ports will start in October and with this upgrade will be competitive with USB 3.0 which will work up to 4.8 GB/s.
